The interior is spartan. And it doesn't handle very well, so care should be exercised, particularly in the rain. We found it performed admirably on hell's revenge, cliff hanger, and other challenging trails around moab, utah. Generous ground clearance helps the rubicon traverse the trail. one of the biggest decisions when buying a wrangler is selecting the top. Purists prefer the soft top, a high-quality piece of equipment that can be configured according to the weather. Doors may be removed for the maximum open-air experience. The hard top comes with full-height doors and roll-up windows. Rearward visibility is better, and it's further aided by the rear-window defroster, wiper and washer. Wind noise is greatly reduced. The hard top can be removed, although we haven't tried this. Either top is far easier to remove or install than those of pre-2001 models and provides much better sealing from the elements. the exterior mirrors are made of plastic, which jeep engineers say holds up better than metal when going off-road. interiorgetting into a jeep wrangler requires a tall step up. (running boards are not available as they'd be vulnerable on rough trails.) once inside, the cabin is spartan but highly functional. seats and fabrics are comfortable. The easily removable, fold-and-tumble rear seat is equipped with the latch (lower anchors and upper tethers for children) system for mounting child safety seats directly to the structure of the seat. On all models, the interior is weatherproofed, and can be cleaned with a hose, thanks to drain plugs in the floor. The interior light continues to be managed by a switch in the door frame, so a fuse must be pulled to extinguish the light when the wrangler is operated sans doors. the wrangler remains miles away from luxurious. Recent improvements, however, make the interior more comfortable than it used to be. The mirror automatically dims when headlights shine on it; this bit of luxury technology may sound out of place in a wrangler, but it's an important feature when the top is off. Radio controls are located in the center stack. Corner pods located just behind both b-pillars house interior lamps, providing theater lighting. the 10-inch longer wheelbase on the unlimited translates directly into more interior room, especially in the back seats and cargo area. Rear-seat legroom is up by two inches over the standard models, and the space behind the rear seat grows lengthwise by 13 inches. The unlimited's towing capacity is 3500 pounds compared with the shorter wrangler's 2000 pounds. research firm j. 2008 jeep liberty review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, smoother and a little larger. introductionthe jeep liberty is all-new for 2008. It's slightly bigger and has a smoother ride, but it maintains the ruggedness of the previous version. The 2008 liberty is quite capable off road, one of the best in its class. the 2008 jeep liberty is 2. 5 inches longer overall and its wheelbase is two inches longer than that of its predecessor. With heavily revised styling, the 2008 liberty is taller and more angular than the 2001-2007 models, reminiscent of the much-loved, rugged but crude 1990s jeep cherokee. Compared to recent jeep offerings such as the patriot and compass, the all-new 2008 liberty is more of a true jeep, with off-road prowess and bold, upright styling. the only engine for 2008 is a carryover 3. 7-liter v6 that makes 210 horsepower. When it comes to fuel economy, the liberty's weight and powertrain provide numbers that are on the lower end of the class. jeep has made an effort to refine the liberty and add premium options. Snow belt drivers will appreciate the new full-time all-wheel drive system available in addition to the carryover part-time system. Within its class, only the nissan xterra can claim as much off-road capability. when they redesigned it, jeep engineers set out to give the 2008 liberty pleasant road manners and, when it comes to ride quality, they succeeded. The liberty rides firmly, but irons out most bumps quite well and is stable on the highway. The liberty sacrifices handling for off-road prowess, however. The liberty leans in turns and has a floppy feeling in quick changes of direction. It's this aspect that makes the liberty most comparable to the nissan xterra and ford escape. These three are more rugged, more capable off road than the honda cr-v, toyota rav4, and the new nissan rogue, which are lighter, more agile, and more carlike. If we were heading up a rough logging road, we'd be pleased to be in a liberty. inside, the liberty has plenty of room for five. We view it as a step back in terms of materials quality and fit and finish, however. The previous liberty had more soft touch surfaces and closer panel gaps, while the current model has more hard-plastic surfaces. Still, it's not an unpleasant cockpit. cargo room is a plus. The liberty's second row seats fold flat, as does the front passenger seat, to provide plenty of room for hauling boxes, bikes and life's other accessories. with a maximum towing capacity of 5000 pounds, rugged off-road capability and plenty of cargo space, the 2008 jeep liberty is a good choice for small families or couples that tow boats or go camping. The models are sport 20,330), sport 4wd 21,940), limited 24,515), and limited 4wd 26,125). The lone engine is a 210-horsepower 3. 7-liter v6. The limited's premium sound group 395) adds jeep's uconnect wireless cell phone link to the sport's version. safety features include the mandated dual front airbags, plus head-protecting side-curtain airbags with rollover sensors and front side airbags for torso protection. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes with brake assist, hill start assist, traction control, and electronic stability control with rollover mitigation. The antilock brakes have rough road detection; when rough conditions are detected, the system holds the brake pulses longer to better slow the vehicle. Hill descent control is standard on 4x4 models. Optional safety features include trailer sway control and rear obstacle detection. walkaroundwhen jeep introduced the liberty in 2001, it was the middle child of a three vehicle lineup. Now that it's redesigned for 2008, it's the middle child of a seven-vehicle lineup. Compared to recent jeep offerings such as the patriot and compass, however, it is more of a true jeep, with off-road prowess and bold, upright styling. the 2008 liberty is unmistakable as a jeep. The 2008 model is 2. 5 inches longer and 0. 8 inch wider than the previous generation (2001-07), with a wheelbase that grows by 1. 8 inches. Its tall, upright, angular styling fits with the current jeep design idiom while also recalling the 1990s cherokee. It is the same platform used for the last model and it is shared with the dodge nitro. The big news here is the new rear suspension. It's an independent five-link unit that allows for greater interior room and better ride characteristics. the most noticeable aspect of the front end is jeep's characteristic seven-slot grille, which is taller on this model. The grille is body color on sport, chrome on limited. The front fascia is body color on all, and the front air dam is removable to provide more ground clearance for off-roading. from the side, the liberty looks like a junior commander, with tall windows in a squared off greenhouse. The limited's chrome theme extends to the side with chrome side trim and roof rails. These components are black on sport, and the roof rails are optional. Jeep has moved it under the floor for 2008. The tailgate also changes from a swing gate to a liftgate design, and separate opening rear glass is newly standard. jeep says its competition is the honda crv, ford escape, toyota rav4 and nissan xterra. The 2008 liberty is approximately the same size as these vehicles, but is considerably heavier than all but the xterra. It is also more capable off-road than all but the xterra. interiorthough not luxurious, the new interior of the 2008 liberty is functional. Most drivers will like the high seating position. Head room in the front seat is plentiful, but the tallest drivers will want more available front leg room. The side mirrors are large and the cabin has a lot of glass, making for fine rear visibility. the gauges are easy to spot and the controls are simple to use. The climate functions are controlled by three simple knobs and the radio and other vehicle controls are straightforward. There is a useful cubby on the center of the dash top, and sizable grab handle is located just above the smallish glove box. The center console is deep and has a removable tray on top. There is also a small tray next to the shift handle. In 4wd models, a small electronic switch replaces last year's transfer case lever. we don't think the interior feels like an upgrade from the previous generation, however. The previous liberty had some nice materials and quality finishes that are lacking in this new version. The dash, for instance, is all plastic with no sof.

It's an anachronism, and should probably be a dinosaur, but no, it's still popular because it fills a need like no other vehicle. Despite its inherent design limitations (we won't call them flaws), primarily balance and storage, the wrangler delivers inimitable fun. Challengers have not been able to steal from the allure of the jeep. The dynasty lives on. jeep engineers have kept the momentum rolling by making timely improvements. It's a perfect fit for the times. It doesn't change or pervert the character of wrangler at all, it just makes the vehicle more attainable, and more desirable for many. It's much more comfortable and convenient, and holds way more stuff, including happy passengers. maybe best of all, a lot more content has been added, especially in the areas of comfort, safety and convenience; and there has been an average price reduction of $1200 down the line. each of the six models of the wrangler uses the same new engine, a 3. 8-liter v6 making 12 more horsepower than the previous trusty inline-6 that's been around for more than 20 years. It has the same peak torque but at a higher range, and that detracts some from the wrangler's uphill performance; but gas mileage is about the same, at 16 city and 19 highway for the 4x4. There are also a dana 44 rear axle, trak-lok anti-spin differential, 16- or 17-inch aluminum wheels, electronic front sway bar disconnect, trailer tow group, tow hooks, engine block heater, and locking fuel filler cap. the sahara 19,345) is the premium model in the lineup, and adds the sunrider top, the electronic stability program, electronic roll mitigation, 17-inch aluminum wheels with goodyear wrangler tires, body-colored fender flares, tubular side steps, heavy-duty suspension, tinted windows, cruise control, foglamps, tow hooks, and the infinity sound system. To the sahara, it adds the disconnecting front sway bar, rock-trac part-time transfer case with 4:1 low range, dana 44 front and rear axles, tru-lok locking front and rear differential, 4. 10 axle ratio, rock rails, and 32-inch b. The halogen headlamps are brighter, and the new front bumper has integrated fog lamps near its center. For the first time, there are step assists under the doors to make climbing up into the jeep easier, and the tail lamps are new. The fender flares are bolted on, so they can be easily taken off and replaced with cooler aftermarket flares. The bumpers, step assists and fender flares are all sturdy, flat-black plastic on the x. the standard soft top is improved for easier removal and installation. The sunrider soft top slides back half way, like a huge sunroof over the front seats. The new optional three-piece modular hardtop (freedom top) has two front panels that easily pop on and off like a t-top, and are stored behind the rear seat. The third panel over the rear seat can be removed separately and stored in the garage. The freedom top yields a total of six open-air possibilities. under the body, there's a new boxed frame that's 100 percent stiffer in bending and 50 percent stiffer in twisting, with seven cross members. This helps in crash results, and enabled a new suspension: steering geometry, shock absorbers, springs and control arms are all different. Wide spaced frame rails cradle the fuel tank between the wheels. Three skid plates protect the fuel tank, transfer case and automatic transmission oil pan. interiorthe 2007 jeep wrangler two-door is a lot roomier inside than pre-2007 models, thanks to its increased width. The comfortable new high-back front seats, using a handsome stain-resistant gray or khaki-colored fabric in the sahara and rubicon, offer 5. 1 inches more shoulder room and 4. 6 inches more hip room. There's also 2 more inches behind the rear seat, which now folds to provide nearly twice the cargo capacity as before. the cabin is 20 percent quieter, thanks to better isolation from new body mounts, extensive use of something called pcl (polymer constraint layer), and new seals at the doors, along the a-pillar, and at the top of the windshield. as for the larger unlimited, jeep claims that its 86. 7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seat folded flat (the headrests flip back, so they don't need to be removed) is more than the toyota fj cruiser, hummer h3 or nissan xterra. That huge difference is because in the regular wrangler, the rear passengers sit directly over the axle and between the wheel wells; in the unlimited, the axle is located behind them. The instruments, including the optional compass and temperature gauges, are easy to read, and the controls are soothingly simple. The solid square buttons look good and are easy to understand and operate. Seven speakers, including subwoofer, is a whole lot of speakers for the cabin of a jeep, and we think this is a good thing. The locking glove box is about one-third larger than before, and there's a convenient grab handle above it.
